Will an Expunged Record Still Show on a Background Check?
Expungement can dramatically improve what appears in an ordinary background check, but “gone everywhere forever” is often too broad a promise.

Public court search
Many record-relief orders restrict the case from ordinary public court lookup. The precise effect depends on the order and court system.

The state police or central repository may need to receive and process the order. This can take additional time after the judge signs it.
Private background-check companies
Commercial vendors refresh data on their own cycles. If an outdated record keeps appearing, a person may need to dispute the report under applicable consumer-reporting law and provide the court order.
Government and licensing access
Certain agencies may retain access to sealed information for defined purposes. Applicants should read disclosure questions carefully rather than assuming every application can be answered “no.”
Keep certified copies
Once relief is granted, keep a certified copy of the order permanently. It may be needed years later to correct a database, explain a status or document the legal effect of the relief.
