What Happens After a § 925(c) Gun Rights Restoration Application Is Filed?

Submitting a federal firearm-rights restoration application is the beginning of the review, not the end. Applicants should expect identity verification, record collection, public-safety analysis and possible follow-up requests.

Quick answerDOJ’s process includes the application, fee, electronic fingerprints, character references, agency review and a final discretionary decision by the Attorney General or authorized decision-maker.

Application and fee

DOJ currently lists a $30 non-refundable application fee, with information about waiver or reduction requests. Fees and procedures can be updated, so the current federal instructions control.

Electronic fingerprints

The program currently requires fingerprints through a USPS electronic process. Applicants receive instructions after submission and should follow the barcode or case-number workflow provided by the government.

Background review

The application is designed to allow the Department to assess the circumstances giving rise to the prohibition, criminal history, reputation, subsequent conduct and public-interest factors. A complete, internally consistent file matters.

Requests for more information

DOJ restoration specialists may request additional records or clarification. Keep copies of everything submitted and maintain an organized chronology so later requests can be answered accurately.

Decision and publication

Section 925(c) requires grants of relief to be published in the Federal Register with reasons. A grant addresses applicable federal firearm disabilities; applicants must still determine whether independent state restrictions remain.
